The Port of San Diego is pleased to announce that 55 businesses have completed their scorecards. We have a workshop coming up May 31, 2011 on LEED 101 from 2-3:30 pm where participants will get an introduction to the LEED rating system. This system is a universal way buildings can be measured for their sustainability.

We are excited about the launch of this new blog feature to provide participants and the San Diego Bay Community with an interactive way to learn more about the sustainable efforts around the bay! Stay tuned for more posts to come.

The Green Business Challenge is a voluntary program spearheaded by the Port of San Diego and San Diego Gas & Electric to help businesses around the Bay reduce energy consumption and their impacts on the local environment.  Follow the participants’ progress as they take the Challenge and showcase their environmental efforts as stewards of San Diego Bay.

Direct Install is a program that retrofits lighting, refrigeration, and heating and cooling systems. Not only is this program free for participants, but they see lower energy bills immediately! This high quality video was promoted on SDG&E and the Port's Facebook and Twitter accounts to potentially reach tens of thousands of followers.

The Green Business Network offers free energy support to Port businesses, including on-site analysis of energy consuming systems, assistance with SDG&E programs, and customized calculations to help businesses create a strategic plan for implementing energy saving projects. thumb Sun Harbor EV chargersSun Harbor Marina installed chargers for hybrid electric cars at the west end of their parking lot. The service is part of Sun Harbor's long-term strategy to serve their tenants and care for the environment. Kathy O'Brien, Marine Manager at Sun Harbor states, "We are starting to see Electric and Hybrid cars in the parking lot. It was time to provide the charging stations for drivers to use while dining at Pizza Nova or visiting the marina for an outing out on the Bay. We hope to see the stations in use regularly as the community becomes aware of the availability."

The hybrid-electric vehicle chargers are manufactured by Blink. The company's battery charging systems allow for faster charging with less heat generation and longer battery life than conventional chargers. At an average of 15,000 miles per year, gas vehicles cost $2400 annually (at $4/ gallon gas prices), while electric vehicles will only cost about $600 annually (in miles per gallon-equivalent electricity costs).

The interface design is simple, and makes for a convenient, easy and affordable charging experience. Blink stations are easy to find thanks to a state-of-the-art GPS and location-based tools for mobile devices and Smartphones.
